What is Project Asha 1?
Asha 1 is an Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR) carbon project implemented by Tomorrows Foundation (TF) across degraded and deforested lands in the Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Coochbehar districts of West Bengal. It is registered under the Verra Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) as project 4866, using methodology VM0047.
Where is the project located?
The project area spans three districts in northern West Bengal: Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Coochbehar — a landscape characterised by a mix of agricultural margins, degraded forest patches and community land in the Terai-Dooars belt.
When did the project begin?
Field implementation began in 2023 with the first plantation season. Asha 1 is currently in active implementation, with monitoring and MRV visits ongoing.
What methodology does the project use?
The project applies VM0047 (Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation), the Verra VCS methodology designed for ARR projects. It quantifies net greenhouse gas removals from biomass carbon accumulation and soil carbon, with sampling-based field measurement linked to allometric equations.
What is the project area?
The total project area is approximately 3,050 hectares across the three districts, covering plots of varying sizes managed in partnership with local beneficiary communities.
Who implements the project?
Field implementation is carried out by Tomorrows Foundation (TF), a Darpan-registered NGO with ~120 field staff. The MRV and project management function sits under TSLPL (the project SPV). EcoAct/Schneider Electric France is the carbon developer and commercial partner.
Who verifies the carbon credits?
Independent verification is conducted by accredited third-party auditors. ERM has conducted the CCB inception and preliminary findings reviews. KBS conducted the first formal verification review (FVR) in 2026. Kanop (a Verra-vetted DSP) provides remote sensing baseline and monitoring support.
What species are planted?
A mix of native and locally appropriate species suited to the Terai-Dooars ecology are planted, selected for ecological restoration value, carbon sequestration potential and local livelihood benefit. Species lists are documented per plot in the ARR Mapper field system.
How are beneficiaries involved?
Local landowners and community members are enrolled as project beneficiaries. They contribute land, participate in planting and maintenance, and receive a share of carbon revenue. Baseline surveys, FGDs and consent records are maintained for all enrolled beneficiaries.
What does CCB mean for this project?
CCB refers to the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards — a co-benefit certification applied alongside the VCS carbon credit. It validates that the project delivers positive outcomes for local communities and biodiversity, in addition to carbon removal.

What methodology will be used?
